DESIGN DEMANDS LABOR is a practitioner-led initiative of architects, landscape architects and allied professionals who share one premise: Every drawing depends on the people who build and maintain it. We organize around the simple idea that workforce stability is a core condition for safe, affordable, and on-time projects—not an afterthought.
We are a growing, member-driven network of more than 50 design professionals spanning 15 states who see the same pattern on projects every day: tightening labor pools, aging crews, and a heavy reliance on immigrant workers who have little voice in the systems they keep running.

Design Demands Labor does three things:
- Names the labor behind design, especially the immigrant workforce that builds and cares for our projects.
- Translates data about shortages, safety, and delays into clear, usable language for public communication.
- Connects designers who want to align good design with fair, safe, and sustainable labor practices.
Membership is open to designers and allied professionals who recognize that project delivery, public safety, and community trust all depend on a stable, respected workforce. Whether you work in a small practice or a national firm, in housing, public works, or landscape, there is a place for you in this conversation.
